Nagpur: Nearly five years after the plan was first drafted, over 2.40 lakh of Nagpur University (NU) graduates from 2016 to 2019 are ready for DigiLocker mapping under the National Academic Depository (NAD) . Once downloaded, the diplomas of these three recent batches are accessible from anywhere in the world. However, the process hit a snag as the account of an affiliated college in the name of Nagpur University prevents the examination section from registering its own account.
The director of the examinations and assessment committee, Prafulla Sabale, told TOI that the examinations section and the affiliated college have both written to DigiLocker to remove the college from their database. “Once the university can register on the portal, degrees will be issued online,” he said. Sabale did not disclose the name of the college involved.
Exam section officials said they keep getting a message that the institution is already registered with DigiLocker, although this is the first time they have officially registered. “The college is not at fault. They may have tried to upload documents for their students. The system prevents duplication and therefore two institutions with the same name cannot be registered,” they said.
Sabale said the digitization of diplomas was done as part of the first phase of creating a database with 25 years of data. “The university will have a data center to create a repository of student documents,” he said.
Diplomas were scanned after checking grade lists and examination section records for different courses. NU plans to download degrees from 2001 in phases once the DigiLocker issue is resolved.
In 2017, NU partnered with NAD, which is operated by the University Grants Commission (UGC), in conjunction with National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL) and Central Depository Services Ltd (CDSL). But few students were able to benefit from the move due to bad publicity among students. NU has never announced the facility during its previous convocations.
As a result of the MoU, diplomas and grade lists from 2015 have been uploaded for students, employers and others to view from anywhere for free. The installation was restricted to students until they reach the age of 27 or September 30, 2019. Now, a fee is likely to be collected for each document downloaded.
Problems in registrations by the examinations section and the lack of proper details had blocked access to diplomas over the years.
